One Year Anniversary!

Today marks one year since Dan's surgery!

One year cancer free!

It has been a year of ...

- months long recovery
- weeks of uncomfortable sleep
- Maggie's return to work
- Elyse's one year birthday!
- weeks of being ready and willing for work that's not there
- Ayla's fourth birthday! (And mom's 29th(ish))
- a nice, long extended Christmas vacation
- Dan's birthday!
- work!
- somersault induced back pain
- more work!
- Papa Boulware's unexpected and fatal heart attack
- Auntie and Mako moved out
- more work!
- tests, tests and more tests
- nephew's first birthday!
- 8 year marriage Anniversary!
- no return of cancer!

As the months and years progress, the chances of Dan's cancer returning (remember, they were 75-80% after the surgery) diminish. The doctor would still say a matter of when, not if - but that's a doctor for you.

Dan has been working hard and doing well, providing for his ladies and building up that portfolio. One day soon we hope he can take a few weeks off to spend some quality time with his wife somewhere hot.

Or maybe Iceland. We haven't decided.

Once more, we thank everyone that has been there for Dan and our family throughout the year. Today isn't really a day of celebration for us, but it is most definitely worth noting all that we've overcome in the last 13, 14 months.

And as always ... FUCK CANCER!

The Story So Far...

Fuck Cancer. On May 17, Dan was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. Routine bloodwork and a check up of a persistent cough led to Dan learning he was anemic. As his family doctor put it, "super anemic. I'm surprised you can function at all." Thankfully, the doctor didn't just leave it at "here's some iron supplements," and sent Dan for a chest X-ray and an ultrasound. The ultrasound led to a CT Scan on May 16, which led to emergency phone calls mid-movie, an asap appointment May 17, and the diagnoses of kidney cancer. On May 19, the first specialist Dan saw, a urologist, better explained what was happening. Dan has an 11cm cancerous tumor on his right kidney, growing through a renal vein and into the inferior vena cava, growing as a thrombus  up toward his heart. It has also begun to metastasize to his liver. Surgery is the first and only option at this point. Surgery will include a hepatobiliary specialist (liver), urologist (kidney), a cardi...
