🎶 On the ward again ... 🎶

Dan's been living in Room 314 on floor 3South for a few nights now. If you do want to visit, hit Maggie up with a quick note so she can make sure he's decent. His window sill is filling up with cards and balloons - thank you!

The surgery incision and pain have been minor nuisances compared to Dan's back pain and swelling in his legs, due to the decrease in kidney function. The swelling was the worst ... keeping Dan from walking too much, from getting comfortable, etc.

THANKFULLY - a couple high notes.

Yesterday was a loooong day but it paid off. He had an ultrasound to confirm a blood clot in his leg (which is easily remedied with a change and increase in blood thinners), and an appointment with I.R. - Interventional Radiology to remove the ports in his neck and install what the Renal dudes call a permanent catheter. It's really only slightly permanent, in that it stays in weeks to months, depending on just how long the patient actually needs it. BUT, it works much better for dialysis than what he had going on in his neck. From the I.R. appt he went back upstairs for a fourth round of dialysis, where they removed 2.5L from his body. So he feels muuuuuuuuch better. Yesterday they couldn't even draw blood because they couldn't find a vein beneath all that swelling. Today - not a prob.

Today we saw him walking around, eating better, MAKING JOKES, and even, yes this is important, letting out a good fart.

Another plus? Today we saw delivery of a new bed, a larger one with more support (like a stretcher) but a good mattress (like the hospital beds), that he didn't have before. Already he can see the improvement in his back. It's small, but it's there. We hope he can sleep better tonight.

No funny meme today. Just Dan and his girls.

The Story So Far...

Fuck Cancer. On May 17, Dan was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. Routine bloodwork and a check up of a persistent cough led to Dan learning he was anemic. As his family doctor put it, "super anemic. I'm surprised you can function at all." Thankfully, the doctor didn't just leave it at "here's some iron supplements," and sent Dan for a chest X-ray and an ultrasound. The ultrasound led to a CT Scan on May 16, which led to emergency phone calls mid-movie, an asap appointment May 17, and the diagnoses of kidney cancer. On May 19, the first specialist Dan saw, a urologist, better explained what was happening. Dan has an 11cm cancerous tumor on his right kidney, growing through a renal vein and into the inferior vena cava, growing as a thrombus  up toward his heart. It has also begun to metastasize to his liver. Surgery is the first and only option at this point. Surgery will include a hepatobiliary specialist (liver), urologist (kidney), a cardi...
